This whole day I kept
thinking about the game ideas we had for the last prototype in this semester. I really like the idea of being antagonist of the game. All the game outside is about being a hero - save the planet, save the princess, blablabla... But I also like the idea of adopting animal's ability to do something and I want this game to be playable by kids of any age and fun. So, I come up with this idea.
The main character is a ghost who lives peacefully in an ancient cave. One day a group of archaeologist came into his cave. These archaeologist was interested in the drawing left by the cavemen. They wanted to explore the cave. Of course the ghost who had been living peacefully in the darkness of the cave didn't like it. He wanted to scare them off to leave the cave. But he was a low-level ghost. He couldn't touch any live things, he didn't have those poltergeist ability. The only thing he could do is adopt the ability of night animals that has the closest nature as him, i.e. sensitive to light (bat/mole/worm/,,,). In doing so, he MUST be very careful of the light.
To make it feasible for us to finish it within a week, I propose to use at least two animals:
- mole which ability is digging
- bat which ability is snatching the lantern/lamp from the archaeologist
If by the end of next week we have more time, we can add more animal ability.
Oh, as the ghost the character can make ghostly sound to scare them.
How can he adopt the animal ability?
There will be plenty ancient cavemen drawing in the cave-wall. The ghost gained to ability to adopt the animal ability by touching/absorb the animal picture in the wall. Once he absorbed/touched it, he would be able to adopt the animals ability for n seconds. If he has two animals picture, then he could adopt the animal ability for 2 x n seconds. Of course, it is player choice how many picture they wanted to trade for the animal ability.
When the archaeologist is scared and left the cave?
The archaeologist felt into the hole the ghost dig. In the first version we can have the archaeologist disappeared after he felt into the hole. In the next version we can have the archaeologist stood up and run away in fear.
My idea is the ghost use the ability of bat to snatch the lamp to avoid being exposed to light. He used the ability of mole to dig holes and use his own ability as a ghost to make the ghost sound and scared them to the direction of the hole he dig.
Are there any consequence if the ghost being exposed to light?
Yes, of course! Ghost are sensitive to light. So once he was exposed to light, then he will disappear - Game Over.
How do the player keep track of the animal ability and the timeout?
We can just keep a small icon with number to keep player informed about the amount of animal picture they have.
Control:
[W][A][S][D] and [UP][DOWN][LEFT][RIGHT]: move around
Mouse: to look around
[SPACE]: switch between available animal abilities
[Z](?): to activate animal ability
More level?
There are three things I can think for the next level:
1. Animal ability timeout: the higher the level, the shortest the time
2. Resources: the higher the level, the less the number of animal picture you have in walls
3. Persistent archaeologist: the higher the level, the harder to get the archaeologist to be scared.
I feel linear 3D world is not fun for this game. We can use FPS for this game so Alice can be more focused on making the cave. It need not to be a big cave, a small cave will be OK. We can use any 2D kids animal doodling as the animal picture. The engineers will 'stick' it randomly in the cave wall.
The resource management, the mechanism (digging/snatching lamp/making scary sound) is not hard. With digging we can have the animation of mole digging and dirt splashed around. Snatching lamp is not hard, too. We can zoom in the camera into the archaeologist lamp and then make the room dark. Making scary sound is not hard, either, we can just play a ghost sound and the archaeologist will run to the path he came from.
The only concern I have is the archaeologist AI. This is the hardest and the only thing that need more time. How to make the archaeologists move freely in the cave? Well, of course we can fake it. We can have 3 archaeologists in this game and create 5 path-list and randomize it every time player plays.
