I thought I had already done with GameMaker since the end of the last semester. Who would think I will be doing a summer internship with EAE using GameMaker again? Ah well, I guess that couldn't be avoidable. Mike, my very same producer for Vinyl, was pretty concerned about not having found any engineer yet for his summer internship: game for NEF (National Energy Foundation). This game must be done within 1.5 month and they are planning to implement it into their website. After some consideration, Mike decided to use GameMaker - but, of course, it will depend on whoever engineer he got. The reason he picked GameMaker are:
- GameMaker is easy to use especially for simple 2D game
- limited development time
Since the beginning of summer break I did applied for a lot of summer internship but none responded back. Well, I guess this is because I am lacking of experience and expertise. Mike had already asked me to work with him in this NEF game before the end of the semester. In the same time I was wondering if there are more interesting and more challenging project in EAE. It was last 2 weeks that Corrinne, our program manager, told me that there was no more interesting project than the one that Mike had. So, this is how I came to work on NEF game.
This game is targeted for kids 8 years old to 14 years old and the purpose is to emphasis gas safety to kids. This simple game will be integrated into NEF new website. As an education game, this game needs to meet the purpose and as a game, this game needs to be fun. This is quiet interesting, right? We spend mostly the first week designing the game before I finally started on working on the game. This game, which we haven't pick a title yet, is a side-scroller game where we divide the playable area into three lanes. Player can move between lanes only if there is ramp. While moving between lanes, player must also identify obstacles: static (think) obstacles and fixable (take action) obstacles. There will also be quiz which they can choose whether to pick or not. As a gas safety game, there are two scenario in the game: outdoor and indoor. It is basically the change in the background and different types of object spawning. But the game play is still the same: keep running while avoiding "think" obstacles and identify "take action" obstacles. Oh, of course the speed is increased on each level (outdoor + indoor).
